JUDICIAL COMPENSATION

The lack of appropriate compensation for our federal judiciary has been a problem for so long that Chief Justice Roberts recently described it as “a constitutional crisis that threatens to undermine the strength and independence of the federal judiciary.”  Indeed, Chief Justice Roberts devoted his entire 2006 year-end address to the issue and called on Congress and the President to increase the salaries of federal judges to ensure the continued quality and independence of the judiciary.

It is in the interest of all practitioners – indeed, all citizens – to ensure that the best of the legal profession continues to be attracted to, and able to serve on, the federal bench.  The Federal Bar Association is actively involved in supporting the effort to increase federal judicial compensation.

For more information on this important topic, please see the links below to two “white papers” concerning judicial compensation and to Chief Justice Roberts’ 2006 year-end address.
